Carrie (1976)

My first period happened in a frozen yogurt shop while I was wearing white pants. The year was 2010. My mother told all my friends in the process of throwing me a “period party”. There was cake. It had a strawberry fruit compote center. It was awful. Periods are inherently awful. You know what else is inherently awful? Overly strict mothers, religious extremism, internalized misogyny, etc etc.

I love this film. Carrie did nothing wrong. I want nothing more than to save her from her nightmare life and protect her from the wild and weird world around her. Carrie! She looks absolutely stunning at the prom before, well, ya know. There is something very glamorous about being soaked in blood, though. Probably doesn’t feel as glamorous as it looks.

Film would’ve been a million times stronger without the extended shot of naked underage girls at the start. Felt like that was going on forever. Hate that Brian De Palma thought that showing a pig get killed onscreen would be too nasty but a bunch of teenage nudity was a-ok. Dumb shit!
