Smithereens (1982)

dir Susan Seidelman
Amazing little indie film. Honestly I picked this for today’s watch because I was feeling nostalgic and my mind has tricked itself into thinking I grew up in the 80s, but I forgot just how slick this movie is. It’s bleak in a way that’s anything but slow and boring. It’s great to look at (the locations, the fashion, Richard Hell), it’s great to listen to (The Feelies, Richard Hell), all around great.
I need to zoom in on some looks-
Eric’s wife, played by Kitty Summerall, is rocking the most beautiful bangs. It helps that she looks like Brigitte Bardot anyway but wow absolutely gorgeous.

Side note- I tried so hard to find a photo that captured how fucking hot Richard Hell is in Smithereens. This one is the best you’ll get. Somehow his good looks do not translate to stills so you’ll just have to trust me.
Another thing: Wren’s kickass wardrobe. The lipstick on a chain worn as a necklace at all times? Incredibly chic, even if it’s supposed to be punk rock. Girls rock!
